The Good Corn is a complexly written short story, although it only :: English Literature

The Good CornThe Good Corn is a complexly written short story, although it onlyinvolves three prominent typefaces. Elsie, who is wiz of the leastprominent characters in text is referenced in the story throughout, asthe girl or only Elsie.I have chosen Elsie as a character to contrast my views about becausethe text encourages the readers to have a less sympathetic responseand approach to her but I rendermed to have had a very compassionate andsensitive approach to Elsie and think that because the author hasntgone much into detail, in the narration, about her feelings, we areshrouded and made to loathe her character given the third person wise point of view.In the authors place setting, the book was written in the 1950s and is soforth, an outcome of white, manful middle-class ideas about masculinityand femininity where males were the dominant species and the femaleswere always referred to as the inferior race in general. Alsoethnicity and culture played a broad part in those time s because mostnon white people were considered to be greatly inferior and made todo degrading jobs like maids or servants. This is the context in whichwe are made to view Elsie. She is portrayed as an uneducated and isdescribed as being short and dark, with a thick bright complexion. Inthe readers context being short or dark doesnt mean much to usbecause, in this 21st century, multiculturalism is a immense factor andeven white people could look noticeably dark maybe because of a tan. Also having a servant or helper is now, not considered as much of adegrading job as before since and extensively large amount of servantslead equally sufficient and satisfied lives as any normal middle-classworking person. Also, a significantly large amount of these servantsare actually of the white population. Also, Elsie is represented as an uncaring, emotionless, un-maternal,morally irresponsible and a calculative and selfish person. Therefusal of access into her thoughts and feelings coax the reade r tosee her as a just a body who is only alive for corporal pleasures ratherthan being an individual human being with personal suffering, guilt orself-conscience. This has once again occurred because of superiorityissues where the narrator has chosen to be omniscient and has rejectedElsies thoughts and feelings. In the readers context, Elsie would beseen as a sexually promiscuous person as the text wants us to see herbut we would also have questioned the reasons behind her beingeighteen and so free with her body that she could bear two children in
